Summer Fun: Hueston Woods

Oxford, Ohio offers countless opportunities to be active under the sun, and a local favorite is the nearby state park, Hueston Woods. Just a 10-minute drive from Uptown, Hueston Woods State Park is a must-see on your visit to Oxford. Our entire staff enjoy various activities at Hueston Woods, so we’ve rounded up a few of our favorites that may be helpful to you as you plan your memorable summer day trip!

Kayaking & Canoeing

Whether you’re an avid rower or a newbie to the water, don’t miss out on free kayak and canoe excursions every Friday of the summer! Lessons include kayaking/canoeing basics, as well as a guided trip on Hueston Woods’ Acton Lake. Kayak excursions are from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m., and canoe excursions are from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.. Space is limited and sign-ups begin at 9:00 a.m. at the marina.

Nature Yoga

Need a time of renewal with yourself and with nature? Then Hueston Woods’ Nature Yoga is for you! Nature Yoga is led by one of Hueston Woods’ naturalists and includes basic, nature-inspired poses. Classes meet every Friday at 11:00 a.m., outside the Nature Center.

Hiking Trails

Experience any of Hueston Woods’ 12 hiking rails, ranging from easy to moderate. Trails vary in length and location, but all include beautiful scenery of the park's wildlife. Don't forget to stop along any of the park's many picnic areas for a nice lunch break. With 12 options, you’re bound to find a favorite for the whole family!

  1. Cedar Falls: 0.9 miles, moderate

  2. Sycamore: 0.8 miles, easy

  3. Pine Loop/Cabin: 1.3 miles, moderate

  4. Mud Lick: 2.2 miles, moderate

  5. West Shore: 6 miles, moderate

  6. Sugar Bush: 0.8 miles, moderate

  7. Blue Heron: 0.7 miles, moderate

  8. Big Woods: 0.7 miles, moderate

  9. Hedge Apple: 0.7 miles, moderate

  10. Indian Mound: 0.8 miles, moderate

  11. Gallion Run: 0.7 miles, moderate

  12. Equisetum Loop: 1 mile, moderate

Hueston Woods Lodge

If you’re looking to cool off after a long day in the sun, be sure to check out the Hueston Woods Lodge. The lobby has ample seating available, with rocking chairs lining a floor to ceiling window that overlooks the lake. Or, if you’re hungry, head downstairs to the Trailblazer Dining Room for a fresh meal. And before you leave, be sure to stop in the Trading Post to find yourself a nice souvenir to bring home!
