Oxford, Ohio's House Name Tradition

Here in Oxford, Ohio, our beloved tradition of naming the student houses is a community favorite! Each year, the Miami University students who live in temporary, off-campus houses give their home a punny, clever and funny name. Complete with a house sign posted on the front of each house, this tradition makes for a fun time strolling through the neighborhoods of Oxford.

This tradition began in 1973 when a group of college men named their Talawanda Rd. house "The Pit." The house names took off from there and now bring a unique character to the town of Oxford. Some houses are given a new name each year, while others that are passed down among friends have kept the same name for years.
