Students Bring Spring Events to Oxford, Ohio 2019

After a long and quiet January (also known as winter term), Miami University students have found their way back to their home away from home: Oxford, Ohio. This past week was the beginning of their spring semester, and with this semester comes an influx of student-led events to enjoy, from athletics to fashion shows to BBQs in the uptown park. One of the best things about these events? Many of them are open to the public! (When we talk about the perks of living in a college town, this is exactly what we mean.)

Students play a huge role in bringing these events to life, whether they're organizing behind the scenes or performing on stage. Either way, it's important to acknowledge that these events wouldn't be possible were it not for their dedication. Below are just some of the events we encourage you to attend this spring. You'll have a great time, sure! But more than that, you'll be supporting the hard work of talented Miami students and celebrating everything they contribute to our small but mighty town.

Lunar New Year Gala

When: Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Where: Green Room in Hall Auditorium at Miami University (101 S. Campus Ave.)

The Lunar New Year Gala is a fun opportunity to learn more about China and Chinese culture while celebrating the Year of the Pig. (Learn more about the Chinese Zodiac here.) In addition to featured performers such as Genie Chuo and Yazhi Guo, there will be a talented lineup of student performers as well.

This event is co-sponsored by The Confucious Institute, the Chinese American Cultural Association, and the Performing Arts Series. Read more about the event here and RSVP on Facebook here.

Free tickets are available to everyone, including the public, and can be picked up at the Miami University Box Office (34 Campus Avenue, South Lobby).

MAP Backyard BBQ

When: Friday, April 26th, 2019 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Where: Uptown Parks (2 East High St.)

Join Miami Activities and Programming (MAP) for another year of their Backyard BBQ in the uptown park! If the free catered food isn't enough to get you there, how about the petting zoo, games, and musical performances on the pavilion stage? Bring the whole family, including the little ones, and enjoy this awesome opportunity for townies and students alike to mingle uptown.

EarthFest

When: Saturday, April 27th, 2019 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Where: Uptown Parks (2 East High St.)

Celebrate Earth Day by coming uptown and seeing everything that EarthFest 2019 has to offer. This includes games, interactive booths, workshops, and live music. The Miami University student organization Green Oxford will be there to talk about their focus on sustainability and environmental improvements in the Oxford community.

(EarthFest also takes place at the same time as the Oxford Farmers Market, so make sure to stop by the market and support local!)

"outside the box" exhibit

When: Tuesdays - Fridays, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm | Saturdays, noon - 5:00 pm | January - May
Where: Miami University Art Museum (801 S. Patterson Ave.)

"Outside the Box" is a Student Response Exhibition (SRE) at the Miami University Art Museum. For this SRE (the fifth of its kind) students responded to Miami University's call for art within a theme that may sound simple but isn't quite: the Box.

The works of art that are now displayed in the art museum were chosen through a formal process by a committee. Take a walk through the gallery and marvel at the submissions, which range from mixed media and photography to poetry and stop motion animation. Afterward, you can vote for your favorites at the gallery kiosk. Based on these votes by the public, three works will be chosen for cash awards.

Read more about the exhibition here.

annual Fashion Show by muf&d

When: Saturday, April 27th, 2019 at 8:00 pm
Where: Millett Hall (316 E. Sycamore St.)

The Annual Fashion Show thrown by Miami University Fashion & Design is a dazzling event, to say the least. Talented student designers and models will blow you away during a high energy runway show, complete with music and VIP seating. You may have to remind yourself several times that this a student event, as it feels more like something you'd see during New York Fashion Week (where many of these talented students will probably end up).

Tickets will be available beginning March 1st, and the show theme will be revealed March 15th. Stay up to date on the MUF&D Facebook.

Athletics

From baseball and basketball to swimming and tennis, Miami University student-athletes are going to be busy this spring semester. Whether you decide to travel for their games or just catch them when they're at home, it's always awesome when the community shows up in support. Keep track of the game schedule using this online calendar and stay up to date on all athletics information (including how to listen to games if you can't be there in person) with the Redhawks Facebook page.
