November is flying by! We're more than halfway through the month, which means Thanksgiving is almost here. To be honest, I actually forgot it was coming up until my housemate cooked us an early Thanksgiving meal while I was at work to surprise me. Talk about a great friend!
Now, I'm a firm-believer in giving thanks all year round, but Thanksgiving is always a great time to be especially grateful! It can be really easy to get so caught up in life that you forget to sit back for a moment and appreciate all that you have, so this is your reminder to take a second to reflect.
To start you off, here are just a few things to be thankful for here in Oxford, Ohio!
All the local businesses are definitely something to be thankful for; they help make up the heart and soul of Oxford. There's nothing better than going into a shop or a restaurant and being able to personally know the owners or staff! It makes Oxford feel that much more like home. Check out our video about what it means to support our local businesses. To show our appreciation, don't forget to join us on Nov. 30 for Shop Small Saturday!
Now that I live in a house, I don't spend as much time on campus as I did the past two years. However, sometimes I miss living on campus solely because it's so aesthetically pleasing! What I love most is how natural it is compared to other campuses; I'm not just surrounded by dull, gray concrete. Even when I'm popping from building to building and class to class, I still get a beautiful view no matter where I am on campus!
One of my favorite spots on campus is the Formal Gardens. Freshman year, I lived on North Quad, right down the street. My friends and I spent a lot of time there relaxing and unwinding after class. It's a great place on campus to simply hang out and appreciate the beauty! Another must-see are the Western Ponds. I always forget how gorgeous the western campus is (since my classes are never over there), but every time I visit, it always amazes me!
If you haven't heard about the Oxford Farmers' Market Uptown yet, then I'm clearly doing something wrong. Locals and students (and animals!) gather together here for a fun and relaxing morning. It's one of the few things that can get me up and out of the house before noon on a Saturday. The market covers all your bases: fruits, vegetables, bread, jewelry, muffins, flowers and more! Some of the vendors you can find here are the Bolser Family Farm, 5 Oaks Organics, Brookdale Coffee Roasters, Chubby Bunny Bakery and John Darlin. The Miami Student created a "Meet Your Local Vendors" series, allowed us to get to know the vendors and learn about their stories!
And this year the farmers market winter schedule includes a market EVERY Saturday from 10 am-noon, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to check it out and even get some holiday shopping done.
For each season, Oxford gets a brand new look. From the hanging flower baskets in the spring to the holiday lights in the winter, the decorations are always something I look forward to! When Oxford is decorated for the holidays (as it is now), I feel like I've been transported into a Hallmark card. There's something about the ambiance of twinkling lights (Huge thank you to the street department for putting those up last week!) that makes everything feel ethereal. Although I'm definitely not a fan of the cold, I'm happy to brave it to see all the beautiful decorations. (Having a hot cup of coffee in hand certainly helps too!)
Oxford wouldn't be Oxford without all of you! Each and every one of you that lives here or visits here plays such an important part of making Oxford unique. We're so thankful we get to be part of helping people experience this beautiful little town!
