“Changemakers of Oxford
Previously located on High Street, which is now Calendula, this mural has found a new home now on the Oxford Municipal building. “I think it’s important to have landmarks that talk about and memorialize and celebrate the history of the civil rights struggle, because what we don’t remember, we forget,” Cope said. “It’s very important for landmarks like this to exist, because people need to know how important Oxford was to that struggle in terms of Freedom Summer, the Underground Railroad, and other social justice issues like gender equality.” (Oxford Observer). “The Oxford Hive” by Joe Prescher
Stemming from Oxford’s history, Lorenzo L. Langstroth, “The Father of American Beekeeping,” invented the modern beehive and revolutionized the honey industry while living in Oxford. “The Oxford Hive” mural was created to bring the community together. With that goal in mind, Joe included the community to help paint honey inside the honeycombs and donations made to name the honey bees.
Townie Tip: The Langstroth Cottage is a National Historic Landmark on Miami University’s Western Campus.
